The Thirumullaivoyal police station, on Chennai-Tiruvallur High (CTH) Road, opposite Murugappa Polytechnic Institute, was opened in December 2014. However, the facility remains less visited. Not because crime rate has come down in the locality but because of the location of the station. It is found in an interior region far from the residential and commercial areas. Women complainants particularly avoid going to the police station after sunset. The station is located in a low-lying area, a few feet below the road surface, and is connected by a narrow pathway from CTH Road. It has a green cover with luxuriant growth of trees and bushes around its premises. Hundred metres away from the station is a bus stop, with a thatched roof as a shelter. At night, the 2-km stretch between Annanoor and Avadi junction, is poorly lit with old sodium vapour lamps. In fact, the station is in proximity to Avadi than to the key areas in Thirumullaivoyal.
“After sunset, walking along the stretch, even from the nearby bus stop, is risky as there are hardly anyone on the road,” says K. Amudha, a resident of Thirumullaivoyal. Police sources say the land was available only in the low-lying area, away from the congested Thirumullaivoyal junction. It may be noted that station is located near the crime-infested areas along Annanoor railway station, with a railway workshop and a shed nearby.
