Office-bearers of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Gazetted Officers’ Association on Thursday submitted a memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP) T.K. Rajendran, requesting him to appoint any agency to inquire into the foisting of criminal cases against the officials of the Department.

Members of the association felt they had been targeted by Pon Manickavel, the special officer appointed by the court to probe idol theft cases.

‘Ulterior motive’

Talking to reporters, G. Thennavan, president of the association, said, “In all cases, our association could pinpoint the lapses and ulterior motive of the Idol Wing, which was not only harassing the officials of the department but also targeting them.” Blaming Mr. Manickavel for the lapses, Mr. Thennavan said the non-filing of a chargesheet in a single case clearly indicated that he had not investigated anything and his appointment had so far not yielded any result. The members appealed to the DGP to appoint a fact-finding committee to enquire into each case.
