The Tamil Nadu Tourist Vehicle Owners and Operators Association will launch a website with profiles of all their drivers in the city.
The association has taken the decision in the wake of security concerns following the rape of a woman in a call taxi in Delhi, in December.
“The website will have photos and other particulars of all the drivers who ply for us. We will keep updating it as and when someone leaves or joins us. We will ask all association members to provide us the details,” said S.E. Arulanandam, president of the association.
Though a tough process, he said customers would benefit from it. “Passengers can check the details of the drivers on the website before hiring a car. All the drivers will be properly verified by the police before being appointed,” he said.
Meanwhile, the association will approach the Chennai city police commissioner, asking to ease the driver verification process. “It is not difficult to ask new recruits to get verification certificates from their hometowns. But, it is difficult for existing drivers to do so as it is a long process,” said P. Chandrasekar, general secretary of the association.
The association plans to meet the commissioner and get permission for acquiring no-objection certificates for existing drivers in Chennai itself. “We will co-ordinate and get the certificates for the drivers,” said Mr. Arulanandam.
The association will also meet the transport commissioner with a proposal to have separate colours and permits for call taxis.
