The police urged residents and business establishments to come together to improve surveillance.

The police urged residents and business establishments to come together to improve surveillance.

With traders, shopkeepers and residents’ welfare associations pooling funds, 99 surveillance cameras were commissioned on Sunday by Deputy Commissioner of Police M.S. Muthuswamy.

Among them, 64 are in Pallavaram police station limits and 35 in Tambaram police station limits.

This adds to the growing network of cameras for both policing and civic administration in the cantonment area.

About a year ago, the city police urged communities to finance surveillance cameras.

They encouraged the involvement of residents and shops that faced the streets.

The camera network in the southern suburbs, mostly comprising business areas of Tambaram, Pallavaram, Chromepet, and Adambakkam now extends up to Nandambakkam, and Rajiv Gandhi Salai.

Footage monitored

“Cameras with high configuration were fitted and connected with DVR set up in houses or shops nearby, which are connected to the jurisdictional police stations. A monitoring officer keeps an eye on the cameras,” said S. Saravanan, Inspector of Police, Pallavaram.

CTO Colony and Shanmugam Road in Tambaram West had 35 cameras in 12 places and in Pallavaram, P.V. Vaithilingam Salai, Union Carbide Colony, Kutchery Malai Kuttai, Subam Nagar Park and Ambedkar Ground have 64 cameras.

The response from the residents for installing such facility in their places has been good, as another 75 cameras would start functioning in the next few days in Perumal Nagar in Keelkattalai in Pallavaram police station limits.
