The police have arrested a final-year engineering student in connection with the murder of a youngster in a house in Sadasiva Mehta Nagar off Nelson Manickam Road on Thursday morning. The victim was found in a pool of blood with his hands tied behind with metal chain.

Sakthivel, who was arrested, and his friends had murdered his roommate Sadam due to a fight over purchase of cell phones. “Sadam had taken Rs. 2 lakh from him by promising him cell phones, but failed to deliver them. A complaint was also lodged by Sakthivel in Nungambakkam police station, subsequently Rs. 90,000 was returned to Sakthivel,” said a police officer.

Since Sadam did not return the remaining amount, Sakthivel along with his three other room mates assaulted Sadam.

There are over eight rooms in the building and most of them are occupied by bachelors. “The five living in one of the four rooms in the second floor were Sadam (21), who worked in a private company, Steve (20), who is preparing for his CA exams, Sakthivel (20), Prakash (20) and Vinod (20), who are engineering students in a private college in Nungambakkam,” said the police officer.

On Thursday morning, residents were taken aback when they saw flies swarming the bathroom ventilation of a house in the second floor of a building.

They informed a police officer living in the same street and he in turn informed the Aminjikarai police station.
