A 24-year-old man, who was stopped for drunk driving, jumped into the Adyar and went missing after he was asked to produce the driving licence by policemen during a vehicle check on Saturday night.

According to the police, Radhakrishnan is a resident of Adyar. On Saturday around 10.15 p.m., he was riding a motorcycle with his friend Suresh on the pillion.

When they were heading towards Mylapore, a police team stopped them near the Adyar bridge. “The police team was cracking down on drunken driving. They asked Mr. Radhakrishnan to blow into the breathalyser and the reading confirmed that he was heavily drunk. He also had a bottle of alcohol with him,” said a senior police officer. The policemen asked him to produce the driving licence and he told them that it was in the bike.

“He suddenly turned around and jumped into the Adyar, much to the surprise of the policemen and his friend Suresh,” the officer said.

Search operations

Fire and Rescue Services personnel were informed about the incident. “Two vehicles were pressed into service and they searched for Mr. Radhakrishnan using flashlights. On Sunday morning, a rubber boat was used by the firefighters to carry out the search. Divers and fishermen were part of the search, but we could not find him,” the officer said.

The Adyar police have registered a case of missing person. “We suspect that he would have swam ashore. There is only two-feet water in the river and at one spot the depth is four feet,” a policeman said.

During investigation, it was found that Mr. Radhakrishnan, a B.Com graduate, had an assault case against him. “He spent a few months in prison and after coming out he fell into bad company. The family was initially staying in R.A. Puram, but shifted to Pallikaranai and then to Adyar to ensure that he was away from his friends,” said the officer.
