DMK leader M.K. Stalin on Tuesday demanded a white paper on the amount said to have been spent by the Chennai Corporation on civic infrastructure development works in the past 17 months.
Addressing a protest rally against the civic body administration near the district collectorate, he said Mayor Saidai Duraisamy in a recent meeting, had claimed Rs. 1,100 crore had been spent on road works, in spite of several of the city’s roads being pothole-ridden.
“Similarly, he had said that Rs. 4,000 crore had been spent on other infrastructure development works, but we do not know which works these are. The Corporation should release a list of roads re-laid and works that have been completed,” he said.
Mr. Stalin said the Corporation was not interested in spending money, which is allotted by MLAs of opposition parties, on developmental works.
He said, in the last two years he had received Rs. 4 crore as MLA constituency development funds but though he had written to the civic body to allocate funds for upgrading school buildings, improving noon meal centres, and for a bus terminus and community hall, none of the amount had been spent so far.
Former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran, MP T.K.S. Elangovan and former Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian participated in the protest.
