The Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur has added a few more feathered inmates.

Seven species of birds were rescued locally and quarantined for a stipulated period at the Veterinary Hospital.

As these birds are in good health, they have now been displayed for visitors, according to zoo officials.

These birds will attract more visitors with their vibrant colours and unique calls. The species are Scarlet Macaw, Catelina Macaw, Harlequin Macaw, Severe Macaw, Dusky Pionus, Ruppels Parrot, and Orange- winged Amazon. A majority of these birds are commonly found in Central and South American countries.

“The Arignar Anna Zoological Park houses 89 bird species, which amounts to 1,604 individuals. Of these, 61 are native varieties and 28 are exotic breeds. Due to the scientific management adopted in the zoo, the birds housed here show excellent breeding,” a zoo official added. Already the zoo possesses parrots, Silver Pheasants, Red and Green Macaws, Red and Blue Macaws, Grey Cockatiels and White Peacocks. The zoo has one of the largest walk-through aviaries, and a renovated bird house. It is spread over 1.5 acres and is the biggest such facility in a zoo in the country, said authorities.
