Sensitisation event educates youth on issues of gender, sexuality

June 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

Thunderous applause greeted Anne C. Daugherty’s statement that the United States works with countries across the world to help stop violence against LGBT communities. “LGBT rights are human rights,” said the social media manager of the US Consulate General in Chennai.

Ms. Dougherty was speaking at an event organised by Sahodaran, an organisation that works on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender issues, on Tuesday.

The event, aimed at sensitising young people about issues of alternate sexual orientation and gender identity, was geared towards creating understanding and non-hostile mainstream spaces for queer/trans youth.

A presentation on the subject explained the basics to the college students gathered there, emphasising that there was nothing wrong with men and women finding members of the same sex attractive, or even finding members of both sexes attractive.

“Homosexuality is not something new. It has been around for hundreds of years,” the presenter said.
