The second flyover at Retteri junction on the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai, which is under construction, will be 100 metres longer than the one that is now open to traffic.
The crucial junction at the intersection of the Jawaharlal Nehru Salai and Perambur Red Hills Road, already has a 540-metre long unidirectional flyover, in which traffic flows from Koyambedu side. The one under construction for traffic from the other direction is likely to be completed by March 2019.
Length to be increased
The length of the flyover had to be increased to avoid construction inside a channel carrying excess water from the Retteri lake, explained sources in the Highways Department, which is carrying out the work.
The construction had slowed down a few ago months, due to delay in shifting of overhead power cables, streetlight poles and underground sewer mains. Redesigning was also necessitated at a few spots since they found concrete structures, at a depth of six metres, when they dug for foundation.
“Instead of the originally planned 20 spans, it will have 27 spans now. We have programmed the work in such a manner that it will get over before the end of this financial year. Since additional construction is required, we will soon write to the State government seeking funds,” explained an official in the department.
