Education advances human knowledge and brings together communities, Helen Pennant, director of Cambridge Trust has said.

Speaking at an event to present the Pemanda Monappa Scholarship for study in the University of Cambridge, she said the trust was set up to give financial support to international students, irrespective of their social and economic backgrounds. “This scholarship may be for one person but we should see the impact one person has and it goes very far. This is celebration of excellence in education,” she said.

Mohammed Fadil was presented with The Pemanda Monappa Scholarship. A graduate in chemical engineering, he will pursue further studies at St. Edmunds College.

The scholarship was established by P.M. Belliappa, a retired IAS officer, in memory of his father Pemanda Monappa.

Prince of Arcot Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali presented the award letter to Mohammed Fadil.

N. Ravi, publisher of The Hindu Group, said Pemanda Monappa had a great reputation and was an extremely efficient police officer.

He noted how Srinivasan Ramanujam, a genius in mathematics, went to Cambridge to study. Nobel Prize winner Venkatraman Ramakrishnan went there as well.

He said Mr. Belliappa’s contribution to pursuit of excellence in education is important for nation building.
