A crack has appeared on the road near Tondiarpet due to ongoing elevated Chennai Metro Rail work for phase I extension project.
Shoring process
According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited officials, when the shoring process was being carried out as part of excavation work for laying the pile cap, the earth was disturbed and then yielded. This is done for construction of a viaduct for the elevated stretch from Tondiarpet to Tollgate. “The soil underneath slipped in, causing a crack on the road. As a preventive measure, traffic was diverted for an hour and was later restored,” an official said.
At present, tunnelling work is complete and work to construct cross passages — the pathway commuters can use in case of an emergency to exit the tunnels — are on in the underground stretch from Washermanpet to Korukkupet.
Phase I extension
This stretch is a part of phase I extension project from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar estimated to cost ₹3,770 crore.
This project is partly underground from Washermanpet to Korukkupet and from there, it is an elevated stretch till Wimco Nagar.
The work to construct the elevated stretch is on.
