Residents of West Tambaram woke up to a shock on Wednesday morning with their streets dug up and telephone cables damaged.

The indiscriminate digging of the road in the dead of the night has angered residents of Kennedy Street, Brindavan Avenue and Rajarathinam Street. They said earth-moving equipment was used to dig up 250 metres of the road.

Residents who questioned staff engaged in the road digging on Wednesday, were informed that the work was to lay new power supply cables. What shocked the residents was that when they enquired at Tambaram Municipal office, they were informed that the officials there were not aware of it and that they had not given permission to any government agency for road-cutting.

Residents charged that the road-cut is the handiwork of a contractor entrusted with a maintenance work by Tangedco. Municipal officials too were furious over the road damage. Their permission had not been sought for the work, an official made it clear. Brindavan Avenue and New State Bank Colony Road were laid two months ago after Metrowater finished their work of laying pipelines in Kailasapuram, they said.

G. Ramachandran, a resident of Brindavan Avenue said residents suffered as the telephone lines were set right only on Friday morning and wondered how long it will take for road restoration works to begin.
