Members of the Federation of Civic and Welfare Associations of Pallavapuram recently met E. Karunanidhi, MLA of Pallavaram constituency, and other municipality authorities to discuss various civic problems in the neighbourhood. The team was led by president V. Santhanam and secretary C. Murugaiyan. The problems discussed included irregular garbage collection, bad roads, desilting of Nemilichery Eri and implementation of Chembarambakkam Eri drinking water scheme.

Irregular garbage collection

In Chromepet, Hasthinapuram, Keezhkattalai and Pallavaram, conservancy workers collect domestic waste from the households only once in four days. As a result, residents dump garbage on the roads. The garbage mounds hinder movement of vehicles on the stretch and attract stray dogs and pigs in large numbers,” says C. Ravi, a resident of Hasthinapuram.

A municipality official says, “The problem of irregular garbage collection is due to lack of conservancy workers. At present, the conservancy operation is carried out by people from Narikuravar community. From January 2019, new workers will be appointed on a permanent basis. The process of recruitment is under way. Soon, the concept of bin-less streets will be implemented strictly in areas coming under Pallavaram Municipality. As per the plan, garbage bins at various streets in the neighbourhood will be removed and conservancy staff will collect domestic waste at the doorsteps of the residents. Once garbage is collected, the trash will be segregated at 12 segregation centres in Chromepet.”

Members have requested the residents to extend their support to the municipality and asked them not to throw garbage on the roads. “As far as residential apartments are concerned, the association must keep a bin inside the premises,” says Santhanam.

Bad roads

In Nehru Nagar, Chromepet, Saraswathi Colony, Hasthinapuram, Meera Street, Aishwarya Nagar, off Pallavaram –Thoraipakkam Radial Road and The Chromepet New Colony, roads are battered and uneven. “Temporary patchwork has been carried out and potholes levelled on a few roads. Soon after northeast monsoon, steps will be taken to relay the damaged roads,” says civic authorities.

Desilt Nemilichery Eri

Members have urged the Municipality to take steps to arrest discharge of sewage from houses on the northern side of the lake. On the southern side, the Municipality has constructed a well that collects sewage from households and sewage is then pumped to a treatment plant through underground drainage system.

“More than 90% of pipe-laying work for the Chembarambakkam drinking water scheme has been completed and the scheme will be implemented in January,” says an official.
