The re-laying of bus route and interior roads, suspended by the Chennai Corporation owing to the Assembly elections, has resumed.

Anna Main Road in K.K.Nagar was the first to be re-laid on Monday after the elections. P.V.Rajamannar Salai was among the bus route roads re-laid on Tuesday.

The civic body had completed re-laying of 137 of 154 bus route roads before the elections. Resistance to re-laying of the remaining roads by political party functionaries in various localities of the city led to suspension of the work by the Corporation.

According to Corporation officials, a chunk of the bus route roads where the works were suspended were in the Kodambakkam zone.

Residents of Ashok Nagar said work to re-lay roads in their area was suspended before the election.

V. G. Krishnan, a resident of K. K. Nagar, said that work on the K. K. Salai in MGR Nagar was stopped a month ago owing to protests from political party workers. Only a portion of the road has been re-laid after the cold milling process. Interior roads such as Pammal Nallathambi Street have to be blacktopped.

Residents of areas along Arcot Road have been demanding widening of the road for several years now. Samshad Mohideen, a resident along Arcot Road, said several stretches of the road are either damaged or narrow resulting in traffic congestion during rush hour. The civic body must consider widening the road besides re-laying the damaged portions of the road, which is a crucial link between the city and western suburbs.

Of the 112 interior roads covered under the Special Roads Programme, which was announced after the northeast monsoon last year, the civic body has completed 34 roads.

Of the 96.85 km of bus route roads to be re-laid under the programme, a total of 87.27 km has been completed so far. Nearly 19.7 km of interior roads of the total distance of 49.53 km has been re-laid.

The bus route roads where the re-laying works were suspended after commencement of work include TTK Salai and Whites Road in Nungambakkam zone; Venkatnarayana Road, P.V.Rajamannar Salai, Anna Main Road, Dr.Nair Road, Rangarajapuram Main Road, New Boag Road, 80-ft Road and 12{+t}{+h} Avenue in Kodambakkam Zone; Brindavan Nagar Main Road, Lake View Road, Mahalakshmi Nagar First Main Road, R.K.Mutt Road and City Link Road in Adyar Zone.

Re-laying work of 40 bus route roads under the Corporation's capital funds has been completed.

The civic body has to re-lay eight bus route roads under the capital funds. The roads include Tiruvottiyur High Road, Purasawalkam High Road, Ashok Nagar 12{+t}{+h} Avenue, NSK Salai and Pulla Avenue.

Widening and laying of Raju Naicken Street and Ayanavaram Road would also be done using the capital funds.

Of the 212.92 km of interior roads proposed to be re-laid using capital funds, 181.41 km has been completed. The re-laying works would be completed by May 31.
