Just a few days after obtaining clearance from the Kancheepuram District administration, Southern Railway has begun work on building a road over bridge near Perungalathur station.

It will connect Kalaignar Salai on Peerkankaranai side and Grand Southern Trunk Road on the other.

The railways’ construction wing officials began work on widening the level crossing (LC) No. 33 in Perungalathur Town Panchayat limits to help motorists and pedestrians reach GST Road from Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur. Officials said the other level crossing — LC No. 32 will be closed on Sunday, a traffic police official said.

The district administration sanctioned closure of LC 32 (northern side of platform) near the station but imposed certain conditions including creation of alternative routes, completing the bridge on schedule and providing security for people to cross the tracks among others.

Perungalathur Town Panchayat chairman S. Sekar welcomed the move and appealed to State Highways and National Highways Authority of India to begin their part of the work simultaneously.

Peerkankaranai Town Panchayat chairman A.V. Sampathkumar met senior railway officials and urged them to provide a temporary foot overbridge to connect the platforms and GST Road. He said officials had agreed in principle to their demands, but the work should commence within the next few days.

Vehicles from GST Road have to travel to Vandalur road over bridge, take U turn to reach LC33 to reach Kamarajar Salai. Those from Perungalathur and Peerkankaranai should take LC 33 and go left to reach Tambaram via GST Road.
