The unveiling of former DMK leader M. Karunanidhi’s statue on Sunday will serve as an occasion for parties to formalise and present an alternative political alignment, one that will be a counter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP government.
Though the DMK snapped its ties with the Congress just before the 2014 elections and quit the UPA 2 ministry, the changed circumstances, politically, have made it inevitable that the parties come together to face the Lok Sabha polls slated for next year.
All eyes will be on Rahul Gandhi. “Rahulji is signalling to Mr. Stalin that he wants the two families to work together; that this relationship is beyond politics now. It was after all Kalaignar who first supported Sonia Gandhi’s Prime Ministership in 2004,” said a leader, requesting anonymity.
It could also be a signal to the DMK leadership that it can bypass the Congress’ state unit and talk directly to Delhi.
