Police to crack down on online offenders

June 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

City police will crack down on persons posting offensive or derogatory material on social media forums. Perpetrators will be booked under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Goondas. This comes close on the heels of the recent detention of a youth, Yadava Manikanda, for creating forums with paedophilic content on Facebook, under the act.

Complaints pertaining to cyber crimes received at the police commissionerate and other police stations in the city are escalating day by day. Police statistics reveal that at least four complaints are received every day, mainly to do with inappropriate postings on social network websites. Over 90 per cent of the complainants are women.

“We are thoroughly examining cyber crime complaints over the past few months where the identity or photograph of the victim has been misused, especially on social network forums. If investigations clearly reveal that any suspect had posted content with intent to tarnish the image of the victim, he will be brought to book without doubt,” said Commissioner of Police S. George. As per the new law of the State introduced in 2014, any person can be detained in prison for a period of one year even if he or she has committed a single offence.

The Commissioner added that his team has decided to go tough against cyber offenders by slapping them with the amended act and put them behind bars.

The move follows the arrest of a youth for creating forums with paedophilic content on Facebook
