Plea to save temple land

June 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - CHENNAI:

A PIL plea filed in the Madras High Court has alleged that land belonging to a temple near Chidambaram under the control of Department of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) was being encroached upon and an unauthorised construction was in progress.

The petition filed by M. Sivaramalingam of Chidambaram alleged that the president of Kothattai panchayat, Nagaraj, had encroached upon the land belonging to the temple and was constructing an unauthorised building.

Following representations by the locals to various authorities, inspection by officials were conducted. But the issue remained unresolved.

When the matter came up for hearing, the First Benchdirected the Assistant Commissioner of HR & CE in Cuddalore to proceed in accordance with law if unauthorised constructions were being made and complete the proceedings within two months.
