Motorists taking Lattice Bridge Road regularly have requested the Chennai Traffic Police, to place barricades on the low-level median, on a section of the road opposite Malaviya Avenue. These motorists have pointed out that on the side of the road where traffic moves towards Adyar Bus Depot, an Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) retail outlet of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) is located.

Those visiting the outlet walk across the road, crossing it at undesignated points, and as a result, leave motorists on the side where the vehicular traffic is moving towards Gandhi Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur, startled. When they do this, motorists have to slam on the brakes, says S. Selvam, a bus driver. Recently, a visitor to the Tasmac outlet, after consuming liquor, crossed the stretch amid heavy flow of vehicular traffic towards Thiruvanmiyur. And he almost got knocked down by a moving cab. The cab driver applied the brakes just in time. Fortunately, no multiple collisions occurred as a result of the sudden braking.

To add to the woes of motorists towards Gandhi Nagar, the tipplers park their vehicles in the carriageway and on the walkers’ path hindering free flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Besides, after consuming liquor at the outlet, the tipplers, in an inebriated condition, sit or doze off at the walkers’ path posing inconvenience to the pedestrians.

A Chennai Traffic Police official says, “ Steps will be taken to place barricades and deploy police personnel during the evening rush hour.”
