Nesamani Nagar Residents Welfare Association has submitted a petition to the Kancheepuram District Collectorate and the Head of Co-operative Society, Kancheepuram, seeking an additional public distribution system (PDS) outlet for the residents Perumbakkam.

According to the Association, more than 2,500 cardholders from the following localities of Perumbakkam — Nesamani Nagar, Perumal Nagar, Varadhapuram, Golden Castle Layout, Chettinadu Greenville, RC Blossoms and Urban Tree — now rely on the PDS outlet at Mettu Street.

“As this single outlet caters to a large number of cardholders, people have to spend more than half-a-day at the ration shop. Besides, the outlet has only two staff with one of them having to manage clerical work. Moreover, the amount of provisions allocated to this outlet is not adequate. Most of the time, it is short on some provision or the other. For instance, last month I got sugar only after the 21st,” says N. K. Raja, president, Nesamani Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, Perumbakkam. At the Gram Sabha meet held on January 26, the Association submitted a petition in this regard to the Special Officer, Perumbakkam Selection Grade Village Panchayat. A resolution to open a new PDS outlet was passed during the meet. This issue came to the fore again at the Gram Sabha meet held on June 28. Panchayat authorities say the resolution has been forwarded to the Head of Co-operative Society in Kancheepuram by the Kancheepuram District Collectorate.
