Over 9.59 lakh students from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry began their SSLC examinations on Thursday with the Tamil paper. The examinations are the first of three consecutive board examinations that the students will be writing through Class X, Plus One and Plus Two in schools following the State board syllabus.

K. Akash, a student, said that the Tamil paper 1 was easy with no surprises. “The paper was along expected lines and we hope that the language paper II will be easy as well,” he added.

Students began the exam at 2 p.m. across centres as most exam centres had Plus One students writing the Physics, Economics and Computer Technology papers in the morning.

With the second phase of syllabus revision in the offing, this will be the last year of the old syllabus for Class X students as the education department unveils a new curriculum for classes II, VII, X and Plus Two from the coming academic year.

Flying squads

There were 4,000 teachers who were overseeing the conduct of the SSLC exams across centres and 5,500 flying squads as well as standing squads had been constituted for the purpose.

The Director of Government Examinations further said that there were no instances of malpractice detected in the SSLC exam and one student was found indulging in malpractice from Tiruppur during the Plus One board exam on Thursday. While the board examinations for Classes X, Plus One and Plus Two are all winding up by the end of March, the DGE said that government and government-aided schools should wind up their annual examinations by April 12 and close for summer holidays.

Saturday, working day

Rameswara Murugan, Director, has said that all district education officials should coordinate with schools in their areas and ensure that the exams start by April 1 finish on April 12. The schools have further been asked to make up for loss of working days by having Saturday as a working day.

Several teachers from government and aided schools will be involved in working for the conduct of the Lok Sabha elections and the school premises too will be used as polling centres on April 18.
