One person was killed and four others of a family suffered severe burns in a fire that broke out at a house in Thousand Lights on Thursday.
The fire is believed to have been caused by an LPG leak. The accident took place in the first-floor residence on Gulam Abbas Ali Khan 5{+t}{+h}Street of Mahimai Mary (62), her sons, Vadivel (34) and Om Prakash (32), the latter’s wife Menaka (28), and their daughter Sangamithra (2). The men are employees of an LPG agency in Nungambakkam.
Vadivel died of his injuries at Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital. The others remain critical, sources said.
Around 7 a.m., Menaka woke up and entered the kitchen to make coffee. “When she switched on the light, there was a loud explosion and a fire engulfed the house. Menaka and the others suffered severe burns. It is suspected she forgot to close the cylinder the previous night, resulting in the leak,” said a police officer.
Neighbours rushed to the house and doused the fire.
Fire accident in temple
At a temple complex in Ayapakkam, near Ambattur, two elderly priests were injured in a fire caused by a gas leak early on Thursday.
The victims, Ayyappan (75) and Balan Nambiar (73), both residents of ICF, are priests and caretakers of the temple. Around 4.30 a.m., after opening the temple complex, Ayyappan went into the kitchen on the premises and struck a match, which resulted in an explosion.
He suffered burns, and Nambiar, who ran in to rescue him, was also injured, the Thirumullaivoyal police said.
