Tense moments prevailed in Govindhavadi Agaram in Kancheepuram district, after a twenty-member gang hacked a 40-year-old man to death and injured his family members during the early hours of Tuesday. The police suspect previous enmity to be the motive.

M. Dhananchezhian ran a grocery shop in Govindhavadi Agaram, under Baluchettychatram police station limits. When he was a village head a few years ago, he, with his brothers Sanjeevirayan and Mahadevan, organised the temple festival.

“During the event, Purushotaman from the same village created a ruckus, and festivities were disrupted. A complaint was lodged at the Baluchettychatram police station,” said the police.

On Monday night, Purushotaman and his ten-member gang came to Mahadevan’s house, and an argument broke out between the two over a money dispute. In the melee, Purushotaman’s gang took out knives, and, one of their gang members was injured. However, they claimed that it was Mahadevan’s friends who attacked the person.

On Tuesday morning, the gang returned to his house. Since Mahadaven was not there, they barged into the house of his relatives and attacked them. Dhananchezhian was hacked to death and six others were injured.

The Baluchettychatram police have registered a case.
