A day after Chennai Metro Rail conducted the trial run between Little Mount and Officers’ Training Academy, the first ever underground trial started on Saturday from Thirumangalam Ramp to Anna Nagar Tower Metro Rail station.

According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), an OHE inspection wagon started running from Thirumangalam Ramp from 11 a.m. up to 1 p.m. “The inspection was to check various aspects including track work, signalling and other electrical and civil works along this 2-km stretch. This will go on for a few more months and only after the stretch is electrified will we have trials with trains,” an official said.

The officials also inspected the station work and platform screen door works along this corridor. Further, the officials plan to extend the trial up to Nehru Park in the coming months.

On Friday, CMRL officials began the trial run with passenger trains from Little Mount to Officers’ Training Academy — covering four stations — after it was electrified a few days back. They will conduct the trial run on this stretch till it is commissioned in March 2016. Also, next month, they plan to start trial runs between Alandur and St. Thomas Mount Metro Rail stations and later from Officers’ Training Academy to Chennai airport. It is to be noted that the construction of stations along these stretches is yet to be completed.

The first service of Chennai Metro Rail — built at a cost of Rs. 14,600 crore — was thrown open for public in June.
