The body of woman, cut into pieces and dumped in an abandoned public well, was recovered on Friday, nearly a week after she was allegedly murdered by her husband in Manapakkam.

Police sources said Sethuraman (40), an agent supplying small quantities of river sand for construction to homes and shops, had married Jaya (35), hailing from Cuddalore, 10 years ago and had two children. The couple were reported to have frequent quarrels and their personal problems had flared up in the past fortnight.

A day or two after Deepavali, Sethuraman returned home in the afternoon, when they quarrelled again.

He hit Jaya. She sustained head injuries and lost her consciousness.

According to the police, he then cut her into pieces, wrapped the body in a gunny sack and dumped it in the well, located in the corner of the street where their house was located. He informed his two children that their mother had gone to their native village in Cuddalore. He is reported to have poured kerosene regularly inside the well and neighbours had noticed this.

He had poured phenyle on Friday morning and residents, suspecting something wrong, informed Nandambakkam police station. They visited the spot, recovered the body that was highly decomposed and arrested Sethuraman, who had confessed to them that he had killed his wife.
