As much as 16.26% of all engineering applications received from India by the University of New South Wales is from Chennai, a survey has found.

The city’s youth show preference for business studies and built environment, the survey noted, attributing the growing interest in these streams to international banks such as the Royal Bank of Scotland, Standard Chartered Bank, Bank of America and Goldman Sachs setting up office in the city.

According to the university survey, the State government’s emphasis on introducing smart technology to build future cities had fuelled student interest.

UNSW Sydney has emerged as a popular choice as it is regarded as Australia’s best university for engineering, business studies and built environment, says Amit Dasgutpa, India country director of the university.

“UNSW prides itself in housing one of the most advanced infrastructures. Our practical ‘hands-on’ approach to education results in our students developing a holistic and praxis-oriented understanding,” he says.

On Tuesday, around 40 representatives of the university will participate in an India Open-Day from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Candidates must register for the event.
