Waterproofing in doubt: Water leakage in the underground Anna Nagar Metro station has left a large stain.

The Chennai Metro on Friday morning operated trains on a single track on the Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount corridor for more than half an hour due to power failure.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) authorities said no services were withdrawn, causing no hardship to the commuters. An official said there was a malfunction on the traction supply between the Koyambedu and Ashok Nagar stations for more than 20 minutes. This forced the officials to operate the Metro on a single track on Corridor 2. Services on both tracks were restored by 9 a.m., before the morning rush hour, the official said.

The power failure on the elevated track could have been caused due to bird droppings, which was a normal feature in any elevated track system, officials said.

‘Flight risk’

A regular commuter to the airport complained that a delay in operation of trains could result in passengers missing flights. Commuters on Corridor 2 were also upset about water leakage from the roof of the underground Anna Nagar Metro station. The leak left a stain on the false ceiling near the lift.

The leakage made commuters question the efficiency of the waterproof systems in the underground station. “The leakage was noticed on Friday and necessary action has been taken to plug it,” an official said.
