Coastal Security Group to put up watch towers and deploy lifeguards

With Marina beach continuing to see a spate of drowning deaths, the Coastal Security Group (CSG) of the Tamil Nadu police is gearing up to secure the coastline by putting up watch towers and deploying lifeguards in the coming months.

Till May 31, five people lost their lives on the beach. The number was 19 in 2017 and 40 in 2016.

Major concern

“Drowning is a major concern for us. It happens mostly in places that have tourist attraction spots near the sea. Though the city police and fishermen are trying to prevent drowning, visitors sneak into the sea,” said a CSG source.

According to him, Marina beach, especially the stretch close to the estuary, is not conducive for swimming as the water is deep and the current is strong.

“Apart from Chennai, the sea in Cuddalore, Vedaranyam, Kanyakumari and Ramanathapuram is also dangerous,” said an official.

The official confirmed that the CSG in coordination with the tourism department would be setting up watch towers, deploying more boats and lifeguards across the coastline to make beaches more secure.

“We already have 21 boats across the state. In Chennai we have two boats. We will be getting 19 motorboats in the coming months. There are plans to have seven watch towers on Marina beach and lifeguards as well,” he added. The CSG also has marine home guards, comprising fishermen, to rescue people at sea.

Helpline to the rescue

The CSG has been saving the lives of many people, including fishermen, stranded at sea. “Anyone can call the coastal security helpline -- 1093-- if they spot someone in danger in the sea or on the shore. Last year we rescued 261 persons who were stranded at sea,” said a senior police officer.
