Man stabs himself in police station

A 29-year-old man who was detained in connection with a burglary case allegedly stabbed himself on the neck with a piece of sharp iron at the Thirumullaivoyal police station on Wednesday night. His condition is said to be stable. The lack of a lockup facility in the station led to the incident, police said. Sources with the Thirumullaivoyal police identified the suspect as Appu alias Sivakumar of Hanuman Nagar, Thirumullaivoyal, who was involved in many theft and burglary cases.

The house of one Suresh Gandhi in Venkateshwara Nagar, Thirumullaivoyal, was burgled when he and his family members went to Ranipet on February 7. They returned on February 13 and found the back door lock broken and an LCD TV, computer, gas cylinder, stoves and other household items missing. Gandhi lodged a complaint with the Thirumullaivoyal police. Investigations revealed that Appu had struck at the house and fled with the items. He was picked up on Wednesday morning and the stolen items were recovered from him, sources added. “As there is no lockup facility in the station we had to chain him to a bench. He managed to find a piece of iron lying on the floor and injured himself on the neck. We rushed him to the Government Kilpauk Medical College hospital on Wednesday night for treatment,” said an investigating officer.

Appu's condition was stable and he was kept in the lock up in the Avadi Tank Factory police station later. He was remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison on Thursday, the officer added.
