Farmers in Thanjavur Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts will get their due in full under the crop insurance scheme as the Centre has released Rs. 51.618 crore, Agriculture Minister Veerapandi S. Arumugam told the Assembly on Wednesday.
Making a suo motu statement in the House, Mr. Arumugan said that when cyclone Nisha hit 20 districts in 2008, Rs. 325.83 crore was given as crop insurance in the first instalment.
The State government's contribution was Rs. 306.477 crore, 50 per cent of the amount, while the insurance company released Rs. 19.353 crore.
Mr. Arumugan said as many as 5,36,352 farmers had insured their crop and according to the Agriculture Insurance Company of India the damage caused to the crop was Rs. 651.66 crore.
As far as the Centre was concerned it released its share of Rs. 254.859 crore in three instalments.
This amount along with Rs. 19.353 crore released by the insurance company was given in total to farmers in 17 districts.
Farmers in Thanajvur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam were given 90 per cent of the amount and now they will get the rest.
