Karunanidhi welcomes IIT decision to lift ban on APSC

June 09, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:50 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK president M. Karunanidhi has welcomed the Indian Institute of Technology – Madras’s (IIT-M) decision to lift the ban on the Ambedkar-Periyar Study Circle (APSC).

He tanked various student organisations that protested against the May 22-ban imposed on the student body by the IIT-M management, following an anonymous letter of complaint that the Ministry of Human Resource Development received.

On Sunday, the IIT-M management unconditionally restored recognition to the APSC, following a discussion between student members and IIT-M director Bhaskar Ramamurthi.

Thanking the DMK and VCK cadre who joined the protests, Mr. Karunanidhi said in a statement: “I had urged the Prime Minister to intervene and ensure that a healthy learning environment is restored at IIT-M, and had requested that the ban be lifted.”

Terming the lifting of the ban a victory for continuous struggles by students, Tamil Maanila Congress leader G.K. Vasan, in a statement said, now that the IIT-M management and APSC had reached a consensus following discussions, it was time the students focussed on academics.

State Platform for Common School System too expressed its happiness on the development. “We congratulate the Ambedkar - Periyar Study Circle for demonstrating how the students have the capacity to march ahead, breaking all hurdles, in the struggle for equality and fraternity,” it said in a statement on Monday.
