The K4 Anna Nagar Police Station has a rare distinction — the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has named it the fifth best police station in India.

The station, located on Third Avenue, Anna Nagar, met a number of parameters under the “SMART” category, including “sensitive and strict”, “modern with mobility”, “alert and accountable”, “reliable and responsive” and “trained and tech-savvy”.

According to M. Saravanan, Inspector (Law and Order), after a state-level survey, MHA deputed the Quality Council of India to carry out the survey across neighbourhoods that come under the jurisdiction of the station. “They randomly visited and interacted with members of the public. They also checked with commercial establishments,” says Saravanan.

“Police personnel at our K4 station direct the public efficiently on how to file a case. The station is also known for taking quick action,” says the inspector.

In June 2017, the station underwent a renovation. The premises of the station are neatly maintained, which include keeping the seized vehicles in an unobtrusive manner. In addition, the station is equipped with the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS). “This system allows us to generate computerised acknowledgements for petitions and FIRs,” says Saravanan.

Saravanan, who took charge as the inspector of the station in 2017, has been frequently organising meetings with residents’ welfare associations.

“Additionally, the K4 Citizens’ WhatsApp group is active, where grievances can be registered. If there is a petition involving the Greater Chennai Corporation, we take up the matter with the department concerned,” he adds.

Acknowledging the services rendered by the station, NGOs and private establishments have volunteered to spruce up the station through painting and offered to fund initiatives carried out at the station.

The K4 police station started functioning in 1971, sharing the premises of the Aminjikarai police station. Later, in 1987, the personnel moved to the present building in Anna Nagar.
