Pedestrians on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai walking from near the Kathipara grade-separator to the Metro station will soon have the comfort of holding on to stainless steel railings. The footpath, for about 500 m on either side, will have the railings.

The project is to be taken up under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP) for Chennai circle, at a cost of ₹96.8 lakh by the Highways Department. “We want to provide uniform handrails on all major roads in the city. The remaining stretches of the road will be covered in the next phase,” explained an official.

The department is in the process of completing construction of similar rails on a stretch near the Guindy subway on Anna Salai. It has also finished work near Kamaraj Arangam at Teynampet, Greames Road and Nandanam. Work on 3.2 km of footpath is to be completed at a total cost of ₹286 lakh.

Blocking traffic

Motorists on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai said garbage bins on the road should be placed in a way that they do not block the free flow of vehicles.

“Often, there is a traffic snarl near the Hilton Hotel and two overflowing bins seem to take up at least one lane of space,” said G. Mukundan, a resident of Virugambakkam.
