Many parts of Chennai may experience intermittent rain till Monday under the influence of a weather system over the Bay of Bengal.

During the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday, Avadi received the highest volume of rainfall — 12 cm.

The weather stations in Poondi and Poonamallee received 11 cm.

However, the weather stations did not report any rainfall during the day.

Residents, wary of heavy rain, were glad to experience some sunshine on Friday.

Rainfall activity may resume from Saturday under the influence of the low pressure area that persists over the Bay of Bengal near Lakshadweep.

Officials of the Meteorological department said many coastal parts of the State would receive light to moderate rains during the weekend.

Chennai may experience a murky sky and a few spells of rain or thundershowers in some areas till Monday. The city has received 998 mm of rainfall against the normal of 600 mm for the season so far since October 1.

November’s heavy spells have also helped the city cross its average annual rainfall of 140 cm.

Though there is still over a month for the northeast monsoon to wind up, Chennai has already received 143 cm this year, said officials.
