The efforts of the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras to improve the internship programme have paid off. The number of pre-placement offers has more than doubled since 2015-16.

This year, a total of 130 students (excluding the Department of Management Studies students) have received pre-placement offers so far.

Last year, 114 students got offers. In 2015-16, 69 offers were made.

The Management Studies Department, which coordinates its own internships and placements, has also recorded an increase.

Strong season

Training and Placement advisor Manu Santhanam hoped the increase in PPOs was indicative of a strong placement season. “The steady increase over the years in PPOs also points to the value placed by recruiters on the internship programme,” he said.

Most offers have come from core and research and development sectors at 61%; analytics, consulting and finance form 19%.

A start-up company has also offered internship to a student.

Six per cent of students have received offers in the information technology sector, while 14% in fast-moving consumer goods sector.

Companies such as Qualcomm have made 19 offers, Samsung Research 16, Microsoft 9, Goldman Sachs 8 and ITC 7.

Management studies students have received 22 offers and internships from various companies such as Accenture, VIP Industries, Dell, Ford, Amazon, IBM, Tiger Analytics, Royal Bank of Scotland, Wipro and Fresh Works. Titan and Crisil have also made offers. In 2015-16, eight students had received offers.

“A good number of companies visiting our department provide pre-placement offers to our students during their summer internships. We also support MSMEs and non-profit firms,” said Usha Mohan, Placement Coordinator of Management Studies.

Some students did their summer internship in social organisations such as Rural Technology Action Group (RuTAG) and Government projects (Madhya Pradesh), a release said.
