He produced some big Vijayakant hits

July 23, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - CHENNAI:

Popular Tamil film producer Ibrahim Rowther, who gave actor Vijayakant his moniker ‘Captain’ and produced some of his biggest hits such as Pulan Visaranai and Captain Prabhakaran , died in Chennai after battling ill health for the past two months. He was 64 years old.

For a time, Ibrahim had been Vijayakant’s trusted confidante in the industry, entrusted with the job of picking out the right script. This resulted in a string of super hits for the actor. But the two friends suddenly developed a rift.

Letter

Learning about Rowther’s ill health, Vijayakant visited him at the hospital and reportedly broke down.

He later wrote an emotional letter recalling how the two came from Madurai to Chennai to make it big in Tamil cinema. He wrote: “The true bond of friendship we shared since childhood and the way we achieved our big dreams come before my eyes.”

He held important positions at the Tamil Nadu Film Producers’ Council. Over the last decade, he began producing small-budget films and introduced newer faces.

His last release was Puriyadha Aanandham, Pudhidhaaga Aarambam , featuring singer Krish in the lead role, but that did not do too well.

Mr. Rowther reportedly died of a kidney-related ailment.
