The Madras High Court on Tuesday ordered notices to the Centre as well as all major oil companies in the country on a public interest litigation petition filed by a medical practitioner to restrain the domestic LPG cylinder delivery boys from charging more than the bill amount from the consumers.

Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and N. Seshasayee sought the response of the oil majors by November 7. In his affidavit, the petitioner M. Logarangan of Avadi claimed that the delivery boys fleece ₹20 to ₹100 more than the bill amount from each consumer by citing the physical strain they undergo to carry the cylinders.

Pointing out that the bill amount paid by consumers was inclusive of delivery charges, the petitioner claimed most delivery boys intimidated consumers and took away additional money forcibly. “They abuse the customer and most of the time women and elderly people at home bear the brunt,” he said.
