Groynes to come up along Ennore Expressway

March 24, 2010 03:13 am | Updated June 18, 2013 05:32 pm IST - CHENNAI:

In a bid to reclaim the shoreline and prevent sea erosion in parts of Ennore Expressway, the Water Resources Department is planning to build groynes near fishing hamlets of Chinnakuppam and Periyakuppam.

Officials of the WRD said two groyne fields, consisting of 10 groynes each, are proposed to be built over a 2-km stretch to retrieve the shrinking shoreline along the Ennore Expressway. This would help in sand accretion in the affected area.

The funding for the proposal is under the consideration of the Union government and an approval is expected in a few months.

Once the project is cleared, the work would take a year to be completed. The stretch already has rubble-mound sea walls to control sea erosion, but it is only a short-term measure.

The groynes to be put up perpendicular to the seashore would not only protect it from further erosion but would also retrieve the lost coastline in two decades, the official said.
