Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Friday inaugurated the new commissionerate of the Chennai Police. The Rs. 25.46-crore building has come up over a sprawling 5.49 acre plot on EVR Salai in Vepery. Full-fledged operations in the 1.73 lakh square feet premises is expected to commence in a week.
Ms. Jayalalithaa was given a video presentation on the salient features of the nine-storey structure. Chief Secretary Sheela Balakrishnan, Home Secretary Niranjan Mardi, Director-General of Police K. Ramanujam and Commissioner of Police S. George were among those present on the occasion.
According to a senior official, the offices of various police establishments are located in such a way as to enable easy access for the public. For instance, the ground floor would house the office of the Public Relations Officer, press hall, canteen etc. Petitions seeking Passport verification, permission for meetings/demonstrations etc would be received and processed in the first floor.
He said the new building had foolproof fire-safety systems with in-built smoke detector and sprinkler mechanisms. Ramps were provided to facilitate visits by differently abled persons. Besides adequate ventilation, the building had LED lighting system that would save power.
