Four murders reported in a day on outskirts

History-sheeter, youth, farm labourer among victims

Four murders were reported in a day on the city’s outskirts and in Kancheepuram district.

On Sunday afternoon, M. Baskar, 39, of Padappai, a history-sheeter was surrounded by his adversaries near a Tasmac outlet in Arambakkam, while riding his bike. Four assailants stabbed him indiscriminately and left the spot only after he collapsed.

Manimangalam Police reached the spot and sent his body for post-mortem. Baskar was a close associate of a notorious gangster ‘Punk’ Kumar who was killed in a police encounter in 2006. Baskar had six murder cases against him. He was arrested in connection with the murder of M. Kandhan, 43, in January 2018. Baskar had come out on bail and continued to be involved in extortion on the city’s outskirts.

Another murder was reported at Chengalpattu Taluk police station. The villagers complained about it. Police investigation revealed that the deceased was S. Surya, 27, of Bajanaikoil street, Chengalpattu and the body was sent to Government General Hospital, Chengalpattu.

According to police sources, Surya was a first year law student. He was married. He helped his friend Karthik marry a girl a year ago. On Sunday night, when he was consuming liquor with Karthik and other friends near a lake in Meleripakkam, a gang led by the brother of the girl whom Karthik married, attacked them. They decapitated Surya and mutilated his body. Police interrogated a few suspects involved in this murder.

In a village near Singaperumalkoil, a 30-year-old person was found dead. The Maraimalai Nagar police which recovered the body and conducted investigation, said the deceased has been identified as K. Murugan.

He was said to be working in a farm owned by Santhakumar and had gone missing from the farm on Sunday night. His body was found with the neck slit in a nearby area.

A 22-year-old person was found murdered near Melakottaiyur. His identity was not known immediately. Police suspect that he was murdered on Sunday night.
