The city police have issued a look-out circular against the son of former AIADMK MP R.Kulandaivelu, who allegedly stabbed his 63-year-old mother over a property dispute at Besant Nagar on Sunday night and escaped.

Rathinam, wife of the former MP, was staying alone at her residence on Sixth Avenue in Besant Nagar after the demise of her husband a few years ago. He had represented Thiruchengode LS constituency.

The couple have two daughters and a son, Praveen, 36. Praveen married a Polish woman and settled in London years ago. On Sunday evening, he came to the house where Rathinam was living and picked up a quarrel with her, demanding his share of the property, the police said.

Rathinam called her daughter Sudha, who is living with her family in Tiruppur, and complained that Praveen was threatening her, demanding his share of the property.

According to the police, even as she was on the line, Praveen was heard abusing her.

Hearing it, the daughter asked her mother to go and stay with a relative living nearby. But the call got disconnected.

Panic-stricken, Ms. Sudha called a relative living in Thoraipakkam and asked him to rush to her mother’s house in Besant Nagar. On reaching the house, he found the door locked from outside and noticed bloodstains on the door. He and the neighbours alerted the police personnel at Shastri Nagar station.

Stangulation marks

Police personnel rushed to the spot and entered the house after breaking open the lock. Rathinam was found dead with her hands and legs tied. There were strangulation marks on the neck and a stab wound on the chest. The body was sent to Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.

A top police officer told The Hindu , “We suspect the involvement of her son. It looks like he escaped immediately after committing the murder. Investigations are on to trace him. We have issued a look-out circular against him to all airports.”
