They were returning to city when their car collided with a private bus

Five persons were killed in a road accident involving a car and a bus at Kadambadi on East Coast Road in the early hours of Thursday.

According to the police, the accident took place just after midnight when the car proceeding towards Chennai from Puducherry collided with a private bus coming in the opposite direction on East Coast Road.

In the impact, all five occupants of the car died on the spot.

The police were able to identify them with the help of the driving licence and other identification documents that were recovered from the accident site.

The police said the car was driven by Karthi, 21, of Teynampet, Chennai. He, along with his friends, had gone to Puducherry to meet a friend and were on their way back to Chennai when the accident took place. The other deceased persons were identified as Sathish, 21, of Perambur, Chennai; Thameem of Adhiramapattinam, Thanjavur district; Nethaji, 21, of Kolathur, Chennai and Dileep Kumar, 20, of Villivakkam, Chennai.

Driver held

About 50 persons were travelling aboard the private bus, which was heading towards Cuddalore from Ennore. Around 20 of them sustained injuries and were treated at the Government Hospital, Cuddalore.

The bus driver, Raghavan of Chennai, has been taken into custody, the police said.
