Several fishermen’s associations have threatened to stage a blockade at the entrance of the Kasimedu fishing harbour from June 15, demanding action against boats with horse power beyond the prescribed limits.
G. Arasu of the Chennai Chengai Singaravelar Visaipadagu Urimaiyalargal Sangam said five engines that had excess horse power had arrived at the fishing harbour. “Such engines will help the owners get the best catch but others won’t have much to take home. We have demanded that the Fisheries Department seize these engines,” he said.
Several months ago, around 16 boats were seized by fishermen in Andhra Pradesh stating that boats with “Chinese engines”, as they are known in local parlance, would not be allowed in their area. “It took us over two weeks to negotiate with them and come back home. We cannot go through the same issues due to a few fishing boats with Chinese engines,” Mr. Arasu added.

Two more associations have extended their support to the issue. Last year too, several associations had objected to Chinese engines and staged a blockade at the Kasimedu harbour entrance.
Meanwhile, Fisheries Minister D. Jayakumar said boats with engines that are not permitted under the Tamil Nadu Marine Fishing Regulation Act would not be allowed to ply. “Such boats would be seized. Officials have been directed to issue showcause notices to such boats,” he said.
