Fishermen from a hamlet in Kasimedu staged a protest outside the Fishing Harbour police station seeking action against a former AIADMK councillor who allegedly cheated them to the tune of ₹2 crore by promising houses in the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) tenement.

According to A. Venkatesan, head of the Anna Nagar fishing hamlet, Sasikala Nagalingam, the then councillor of Ward 39, promised residents houses in the tenement and demanded ₹50,000 to ₹one lakh for the same. Over 180 persons gave money to her,” he said.

However, she failed to allot houses. “When the residents asked her to return the money, she threatened them,” he added. On Thursday, the residents lodged a complaint with the police.

Police said that no FIR has been filed as they are yet to conduct inquiry.
