Tamil Nadu has made a good progress in the power sector by securing tie-ups with private players and increasing the efficiency of its own power generating stations in the past one decade, according to the State Energy and Climate Index (SECI) Round 1 report published this month.
Thus, the State has accquired the reputation of providing dependable power supply to its citizens, the report says. The report has given the thumbs-up to the State for energy efficiency. The State has earned a high reputation in the accessibility, affordability and reliability index by supplying 23 hours of guaranteed supply to the consumers. The other States which have provided 23 hours of supply include Gujarat, Delhi and Kerala.
The SECI report for 2019-20, which is based on a wide range of data collated from various sources of the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and several organisations, ranks the States and the Union Territories on 27 key performing indicators.
The ranking has been evaluated through six prominent parameters: DISCOM’s performance (40% weightage); access, affordability and reliability (AAR) of energy (15%); clean energy initiatives (15%); energy efficiency (6%); environmental sustainability (12%); and new initiatives (12%). The State has been certified as ‘Achiever’ as it aggregated a SECI score of 43.40% against the front-runner States of Delhi (55.60%), Gujarat (50.10%) and Kerala (49.10%). The other two categories in which the States and the Union Territories have been segregated are ‘Contender’ and ‘Aspirant’.
As per the SECI marks, the State has been ranked 9th among the 20 big States. In the overall ranking, it is placed 15th among the 28 States and eight Union Territories. The State has topped in energy efficiency parameters with a score of 85.40% by achieving 100% in energy savings in commercial and public buildings and in industrial energy savings.
In fact, the State ranks 5th in the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI), 2020, among the 36 States and Union Territories, with a score of 51.50 Total Final Energy Consumption (TFEC). The toppers are Karnataka (70) and Rajasthan (61). The SEEI calculates TFEC using 68 indicators of buildings, industries, municipalities, transport, agriculture and DISCOMs.
In the remaining five parameters, Tamil Nadu was ranked 14th among the 20 big States in DISCOM’s performance with 57.30%, 12th in AAR with 46.30%, 6th in clean energy initiatives with 21.70%, 7th in environmental sustainability with 39.20%, and 15th in new initiatives with only 4%.
The ranking of the 28 States and eight Union Territories were subdivided into 20 big States, eight smaller States and eight Union Territories for efficient evaluation. The top three performing big States are Gujarat, Kerala and Punjab and the worst performers are Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
