A number of populist budget announcements by the Chennai Corporation last year were not implemented on account of elections to the Assembly and the civic body.
Even though a chunk of the 133 announcements in budget 2011-1012 were implemented, some that created interest among the residents are yet to be implemented. As many as 33 of the proposals have been dropped.
Food testing laboratory to control adulteration of food products in the city, English labs, abacus training for students, laptops for Chennai School students, smart learning programme, restoration of old markets and nursing college at the Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet were among the prominent announcements that had failed to take off .
Officials of the Chennai Corporation attributed the failure in implementation of the announcements to the elections last year. Some of them such as the setting up of a centre for creation of awareness of communicable diseases for travellers to the city, regulation of hospitals and putting up of digital banners to disseminate information on public health are likely to receive priority as diseases such as Swine Flu are being reported in other parts of the country.
Inauguration of ITI for lift mechanics, refrigerator and air-conditioning mechanic courses, mobile dispensaries, sanitary inspectors course in CDH and crematorium for pets were also some of the other announcements that were not implemented.
