About 100 employees of Nippon paint teamed up to collect trash at Elliot’s beach, Besant Nagar, on Saturday. They participated in a 3-km “eco run” to create awareness on beach pollution and its adverse impact on the environment.

The event was jointly organised by Nippon Paint India Pvt. Ltd. and The Hindu.

The volunteers had collected nearly 500 kg of trash, including plastic bottles, bags, straws and abandoned fishing nets during the beach clean-up drive. The Environmentalist Foundation of India was part of the drive.

Besides cleaning the beach, the organisers stressed that it was important to ensure that the trash did not end up in the ocean as it could be fatal for turtles. The sea turtles were significantly at a high risk of getting entangled and killed in abandoned nets.

“Conserving the environment is both a duty and a responsibility of every citizen of this planet. Nippon Paint believes that reducing carbon footprint and minimising pollution will ensure a cleaner and greener society to live in. Along with The Hindu, Nippon Paint is taking the initiative to make Chennai a much cleaner place”, said Mahesh Anand, President (deco division), Nippon Paint India Pvt. Ltd.
