Pedestrians passing through Wall Tax Road have requested the Chennai Traffic Police to earmark zebra crossings on the stretch.
The intersections on this stretch between Kondithope and Elephant Gate nearly ranges between a kilometre and at points, more than one kilometre. As a result, pedestrians, including school children, jump over the medians and cross the stretch. The pedestrians run amok, shocking and surprising the motorists.
Chances of people getting knocked down by vehicles, are so high. Senior citizens and women squeeze themselves through the space between the lights on the openings in the medians and the median walls.
“Driving through the stretch is an ordeal at any point of the day as vehicular traffic moves at a snail’s pace due to encroachments and haphazard parking of vehicles on both sides of the stretch leading to Basin Bridge intersection and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Adding to the woes of the motorists are pedestrians jumping over the medians,” M. A. Raja, a motorist, and a long-time resident of Broadway, said.
Starting near Thirupalli Street in George Town though, the stretch has many intersections, with traffic police deployed at NSC Bose Road and Park Town intersections. However, crossing them is a nightmarish experience.
The traffic police personnel remain a mute spectator to the chaos, pedestrians, complain.
With vehicles literally coming from all the directions, pedestrians are putting their safety at risk.
