Ahead of the Indo-China summit in Mamallapuram, DGP J.K. Tripathy and Chief Secretary K. Shanmugam on Saturday inspected the venue and other tourist spots that the delegates are likely to visit during the event.
The second informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled in October this year. In view of this, a Chinese delegation had inspected the site on Friday.
Mr. Tripathy and Mr. Shanmugam, along with the police and other officials, arrived at Mamallapuram and started the inspection of the venue and the route to be taken by the dignitaries.
“During the summit, the leaders are likely to make a visit to the ancient monuments in the coastal town, as it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Hence, we have to ensure they are safe,” said a police officer.
They inspected Krishna’s Butter Ball, Pancha Rathas, Shore Temple and other sites. “The inspection went on till 11 a.m., following which the DGP and Chief Secretary held a meeting with the police officers and other government officials pertaining to the arrangements,” said a police officer.
Checks intensified
“The entire place will come under CCTV cover and security blanket. Approximately 10,000 policemen will be deployed. Drones will be used to monitor the area and coastline. We have also intensified checks in lodges and even houses to ensure there are no suspicious persons staying in the tourist spot,” he said.
He said residents have been warned against accommodating tourists without valid documents. “Recently, we nabbed a Nigerian and Sri Lankan national who were overstaying their visa. We will arrest the owner of the house if tourists are found staying without valid visa or passports,” he added.
